Had a bit too much fun last night, and now you’re suffering the consequences? Overindulging in food and drinks can leave you feeling foggy and unproductive the next day. Here are some tips to help your body recover and get you feeling more like yourself.
Drink the Water
Because alcohol is a diuretic, it causes your body to pass more fluids than you normally would, leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. By drinking water, you will help your body to rehydrate, which can alleviate the symptoms of a hangover. If you have overeaten this will also be helpful, as staying hydrated is critical to the digestive process.
Get Sweaty
You may not feel like dragging yourself off the couch after a night of hard partying, but getting moving is one of the best ways to help your body to recover after overindulging in food and drink. Exercising releases mood-boosting endorphins that will help your mental state, and the activity will get your digestive tract moving. Taking a walk or doing some gentle yoga are low-key ways to get moving.
Watch What You Eat
The day after overindulging, it’s a good idea to avoid salty foods. As overconsumption of alcohol is already known to lead to dehydration, increased sodium intake at this point probably isn’t a good idea. Instead, go with some bread or pasta, lean proteins, and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables.
Relax
Late nights of partying put stress on your body. This can lead to increased levels of the hormone cortisol, which can mess with your sleep, digestion, and energy level. To recharge, carve out time for some relaxing activities, like meditation or a long, relaxing bath.
A late night spent with friends can create memories that will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, it can also create a massive hangover. Drinking plenty of water, engaging in some gentle exercise, watching your meals, and taking time to relax are great ways to recover after a late night of overindulging.
